Bull City Street Food dropped from lineup

The biggest news that came out of Monday’s DUSDAC meeting was that Bull City Street Food did not clear the vetting process for food trucks.

Although Bull City Street Food was voted to join the food truck rotation in the Spring, the truck will not be operating on campus this year.

Senior Brian Taylor, chair of Duke University Student Dining Advisory Committee, said in a meeting Monday that Bull City Street Food did not clear the vetting process for adding trucks. Director of Dining Services Robert Coffey wrote in an email that he is unable to disclose why the truck did not meet all required criteria to conduct business on campus. The dismissal of the food truck—which would have offered students a rotating menu of options from a variety of world cuisines—leaves a vacancy in the rotation that will be filled after DUSDAC evaluates interested food trucks.

“I think people are happy with what we have on campus,” said junior Michael Smargon, a member of the committee. “I don’t think people are calling for us to fill the spot [immediately].”

The spot is expected to be filled by October, Taylor said. Food trucks that may be under consideration include a gluten-free Vietnamese truck, a Korean barbeque truck and a Mexican option. DUSDAC may also consider re-adding Captain Ponchos, which had been removed from this year’s food truck lineup.

The removal of Bull City Street Food leaves Belgian Waffle Crafters as the only new food truck. The truck—previously named Belgian Waffology—will be on campus Thursdays and has already been met with enthusiasm from students, Taylor said.

In addition to Belgian Waffle Crafters, the remaining lineup includes the returning trucks Deli-icious, Humble Pig, Parlez-Vous Crepe, Gussys and Chirba Chirba.

Deli-icious and Humble Pig are currently alternating Sundays starting at 1 p.m. and both serve food Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m. Although Bull City Street Food was originally supposed to share Mondays with Chirba Chirba, the dumpling truck now is the only vendor on those days. Chirba Chirba and Parlez-Vous Crepe occupy Wednesdays, and Gussys and Belgian Waffle Crafters serve Thursdays.

In other business:

As previously reported, students will be able to sample fare from each of the vendors in West Union this year during events on the Bryan Center Plaza called Taste of West Union. Selected vendors have not yet been announced.

Devil’s Krafthouse, the pub in West Union, is slated to open Feb. 1, and West Union’s grand opening will be in approximately one year.

Taylor also noted that Dame’s Express has been especially busy in its first few days on Central Campus. Given the venue’s popularity and novelty on campus, the menu will continue to be in flux.

“So far they’ve done really well,” Taylor said. “They did some trial runs during O-Week and ran out of food in a half an hour, an hour. On their first day of operation, they ran out of food again.”

DUSDAC also addressed internal affairs at the meeting, such as the application to become a member, elections of an additional chair and committee structure.
