Two DSG senators chosen in special election

In a special election, freshmen Jacqueline Monetta and Jeremy Gottlieb were elected as senators for equity and outreach in next year's Duke Student Government Senate.

The special election—which was open only to freshmen—was held because of an error in Tuesday's original DSG ballot which left off the name of one of the candidates. The election was held from noon Wednesday, April 15, to noon Thursday, April 16.

“Because it was a special election and people were less likely to be aware of it, we wanted to increase the time of the election to allow the candidates to have more time to encourage people to vote,” DSG Attorney General Max Fischer-Zernin, a senior, explained.

Elections are required by the DSG constitution to be at least 12 hours long, but it is up to the attorney general to decide whether or not to extend the voting period.

The Board of Elections also considered making the special election run until Friday, April 16, but the candidates decided that 24 hours would be enough time to get a reasonable number of voters.

Monetta won after serving as a freshman senator for equity and outreach this year. Other freshmen who ran for the seat included incumbent senator Riyanka Ganguly, Jason Rahimzadeh and Sonali Biswas.
