VIDEO: Class canceled again, massive snowball fights Wednesday night

Winter weather caused the fourth cancellation of classes in two weeks the past two days.

A DukeALERT sent at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday announced that the Severe Weather and Emergency Conditions policy would extend until 10 a.m. Friday morning, with all classes before that canceled. At 5 p.m. Wednesday, Duke announced that all classes during the day Thursday would be canceled, with the policy in effect from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Snow began falling at approximately 9 p.m. Wednesday, with up to six inches accumulating in areas across Durham. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Durham from 6 p.m. Wednesday to noon Thursday and again from 9 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday.

Shortly after the men's basketball game against Virginia Tech ended, many students poured out onto quads on East and West campuses to observe the downpour, hold snowball fights and build snowpeople until approximately 2 a.m.

Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, once again notified the student body via email of the extension of the cancellation.

"Some of you have accused me of being too flippant ('sassy' may have been a word used) in my communications," Moneta wrote. "Hopefully you know that my highest priority is your safety. So, I'll keep it serious this time and just encourage you to be careful and to support each other as needed."

Moneta also included a link to the "100 Best Movies on Netflix Streaming Right Now" at the bottom of the email.
