Duke has taken the next step in finding a successor for Laurie Patton, dean of the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.

The University announced the members of the search committee for Patton's replacement Thursday, approximately six weeks after Patton announced she would depart Duke this summer to become the president of Middlebury College in Vermont.

The 18-member search committee is chaired by sociology professor Angela O'Rand, former dean of social sciences. Among its members are 11 professors, five administrators, one alumnus and one student. The committee will submit a list of final candidates to Provost Sally Kornbluth and President Richard Brodhead by May, according to a Duke News Release.

The members are as follows:

  • Sara Beale, Charles L. B. Lowndes Professor of Law
  • Beth Holmgren, professor of Slavic and Eurasian studies
  • Andrew Janiak, Creed C. Black Associate Professor of Philosophy
  • Paula McClain, dean of the Graduate School
  • David Morgan, professor of religious studies
  • Mohamed Noor, Earl D. McLean Professor and Chair of Biology
  • Candice Odgers, associate professor of public policy, psychology and neuroscience
  • Arlie Petters, Benjamin Powell Professor & Professor of Mathematics, Physics, and Business Administration
  • Susan Roth, vice provost for interdisciplinary studies
  • Charmaine Royal, associate professor of African and African American studies
  • Guillermo Sapiro, Edmund T. Pratt, Jr. School Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • James Schiff, Trinity '81 and former chair of Trinity Board of Visitors
  • Lavanya Sunder, a junior and president of Duke Student Government
  • Raphael Valdivia, vice dean for basic research in the School of Medicine
  • Benjamin Reese, vice provost for interdisciplinary studies
  • Richard Riddell, University secretary
