CDS alumni wins directing award at Sundance Festival

An alumnus of the Center for Documentary Studies won the U.S. Documentary directing award at the Sundance Film Festival Saturday evening.

Ryan White, Trinity ’04, won for his documentary "The Case Against 8" that documents the legal battle to defeat California’s Proposition 8 which revoked marriage rights for same sex couples. Made in conjunction with Ben Cotner, the documentary follows the plaintiffs’ five-year journey to the Supreme Court beginning in 2008.

The full documentary will premiere on HBO in June.

While at Duke, White first began working with the CDS to produce short films. He graduated with a major in literature and a certificate in documentary studies.

Watch for an exclusive interview with White in next week’s edition of Recess.
