Duke celebrates Doughnut Appreciation Day

Glazed, chocolate, raspberry filled—you name it—Duke was doughnuts galore Tuesday November 7 th
in celebration of Doughnut Appreciation Day.

Even the cronut, a recently invented but already world famous croissant-doughnut hybrid, made an appearance. At Marketplace as well as Penn Pavillion, these doughnuts joined the array of regular breakfast items, offering a morning perk to those who stopped by.

The Doughnut Appreciation Day festivities are part of a large series of events, ranging from small to large-scale, that the Dining Services has provided over the past year. Marketing Manager of Dining Services Kirsten Marinko said that Duke Dining Staff hopes these events will bring the foodie community closer together.

“We create these events as both an educational tool and a way to engage students with their peers, enhancing the community aspect of dining,” Marinko said.

Another aspect of Duke Dining that Marinko promotes is the Chef’s Chatter Series, a discussion series that takes place once a month and is open to the public. The series, fostering a collaboration between students and the food operations staff, started as a way for students to engage in educational food-related processes.

“We create these "monotony breakers" to keep things fun and interesting in the dining halls and promote [these events] via our social media sites,” Marinko said

The series will serve as a building block to the new West Union, where a teaching kitchen will provide students with a hands-on culinary learning experience. The teaching kitchen will also offer a live feed where those that are interested but unable to participate can still be involved in the experience.

Marinko said that the series will help teach students the fundamentals of cooking and the basics of culinary arts.
