Students and alumni sound off on BSA Throwdown

The Black Student Alliance hosted a Homecoming Throwdown to commemorate the 50th anniversary of black students attending Duke. The event took place on the Bryan Center plaza, where students, alumni and faculty enjoyed music, dancing and food catered by The Q Shack. The Chronicle's Sasha Zients talked to students about what they thought.

"I think it's really well organized. It's my first year, so I'm really proud of the BSA and all of their efforts to make this happen. They did a really good job." Shawn Jones, first-year

"I really like the shirts and this is some good food. And I'm loving the throwback music!" Mina Ezikpe, first-year

"There's a lot of diversity at this event." Taylor Barron, sophomore

"It's wonderful to be back and it's like I never left. It's good to see my friends again. Hopefully I can make the most of the weekend!" Jordan Rodriguez, Trinity '13

"I'm just here with my daughter who's an alumna, class of 2013. I think this is event is a great way to bring people together." Carmen Smallwood, parent of an alumnus

"I think it's awesome. I think it's really thoughtful, well handled and very entertaining. I'm very proud of the whole way they've set this up" John Jenkins, Trinity '60

"I think it's really nice. They should do this every year. One of my students actually told me about it, and that's why I came." Brittney Brown, supervisor at the Lobby Shop

"We've been planning for this event since the summer. We've got 50 or 60 alums and they're here. This event is really a part of a series of events that the BSA has done since January to commemorate the 50th anniversary of black students coming to Duke. The anniversary officially ends this week, so it's nice to have this big event to culminate our celebration" Marcus Benning, senior and BSA president

"I've been all around today and I think this is the most happening spot. I love the DJ." James Hinton, clinical technician at Duke Outpatient Clinic
